November IBD Sales Summary
All merchandise sales totaled $136M at IBD retail this month, up 6% over November 2010. Similar to last month, November dollar gains came despite a 2% dip in units as average retail-selling price increased 7%. Bicycle sales jumped 13% compared to November 2010 on a combined 7% bump in units sold and 6% increase in average retail selling price.
Road bikes and 29ers came out on top yet again this month. Road bike sales totaled $26M and gained 16% in units and 19% in dollars compared to November 2010. While sport performance bikes dominated the sales floor, bringing in $20M and up 15% from last November, triathlon and cross bikes both turned out impressive double-digit gains. The 29er category shows no signs of slowing in the near term. So far this year, sales more than doubled from 2010 with $150M at retail. In November, sales jumped an impressive 63%, and accounted for nearly half (46%) of all mountain bike dollar sales for the month.
Cycling-specific apparel dipped again in November, down 2% in units and 4% in dollars with just over $5M in sales. At the end of the month, retailers were sitting on 12% more inventory than last year, and sell through declined three points to 65%. With the decline in sales over the past few months and extra inventory, it will take exceptionally strong December sales to keep deep discounting at bay.
Aftermarket part sales totaled $25M this month, up 4% from November 2010. Categories with healthy November sales included tires/tubes ($7.2M, +10%) and wheels/wheel parts ($3.6M, +5%). Although aftermarket accessory sales lost 1% overall this month, keep an eye on action cameras, up almost 350% from last November with $1.7M in sales. Lights, car racks and hydration packs also gained ground this month.
