71% of active Americans plan to buy snow sports gear as holiday gifts

That's the figure that SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is reporting today. For over 30 years, Leisure Trends Group has provided accurate and reliable snow sports retail data to SIA, so perhaps we can trust this figure. Check out the SIA newsletter if you don't believe me. Retail activity from August to November suggests that pre-season sales were quite good. The early snowfall seemed to whet peoples' appetites a bit.

Here are some retail activity highlights from that newsletter:

  • The majority of active Americans (71%) plan to purchase snow sports apparel for someone on their holiday list this season. Electronic devices (such as GPS related products and heart rate monitors) (58%) and athletic/fitness apparel (51%) follow as second and third on the list.
  • Fifty-two percent of active Americans plan to spend the same amount on their overall gift giving this year as they did last year, versus 43% of the general population. A quarter of active Americans and 30% of the general population plan to spend less this year, with just over 10% of both groups planning to spend more.
  • Looking out over the next 12 months, 31% of active Americans plan to spend “more” or “much more” on sports, recreation or fitness products and services in the coming year than they did the past 12 months. Half of active Americans plan on keeping their spending at last year’s level, while 18% plan to spend less.
