RetailTRAK™ December 2011 - Running Specialty Retail Sales

Mother Nature may have been cruel to skiers this December but the warmer, drier weather helped run specialty post an exceptionally strong end to 2011. Compared to December 2010, sales at run specialty gained 13% to total nearly $75M. Unit sales gained 15% as average retail-selling prices dipped a modest 1%. December’s strong sales capped off a solid 2011 with all run specialty sales reaching $828M, a 7% increase over 2010.

Road running shoes, 89% of all shoe dollars sold, pulled in $37M, a 19% increase over December 2010. Neutral/cushion shoes did best within the road running category gaining an impressive 35% to total $17M for the month. Both minimalist ($2.8M, +110%) and traditional ($14M, +26%) models contributed to the gains. Stability shoes also did well bringing in nearly $18M (+10%).

Less snow meant cleaner, drier trails this December and that helped trail running shoes to a 67% dollar increase over last year. The category totaled $1.6M as ARSP rose 6% building on the 58% unit jump. While minimalist models drove the growth ($562K, +658%), traditional trail running shoes ($1M, +17%) saw a boost as well.

Apparel sales totaled $13M, a 5% increase over December 2010. Stand out sportswear categories included short sleeve shirts ($629K, +22%), long sleeve shirts ($2.5M, +22%), bra tops ($726M, +21%) and shorts ($1.1M, +18%). In outerwear, jackets did well, up 12% totaling just over $2M in December sales. Socks pulled in over $5M, a solid 19% increase.
