Outdoor Specialty Store Retail Sales Up 3% in September

In September, overall outdoor retail sales drop 4%. Yet specialty stores gained 3%. Growth in camping related categories such as backpacking tents, medium sized packs, camping accessories and footwear sales offset September's apparel declines.

All Outdoor Sales Down 4% in September, Down 5% For August and September Combined. While overall outdoor retail sales drop, specialty stores gain 3% for the month.
Accessories, Climbing Gear, Hiking Boots, Multisport Shoes and Insulated Outerwear Tops All Gained Sales Both in September and in August-September Combined.
Compared to September 2008 here are the category changes in dollar sales by channel*
All Specialty dollar sales up 3%
- Specialty equipment dollar sales +11%
- Specialty apparel dollar sales -1%
- Specialty equipment accessory dollar sales +4%
- Specialty footwear dollar sales +4%
All Chain dollar sales down 9%
- Chain equipment dollar sales -9%
- Chain apparel dollar sales -8%
- Chain equipment accessory dollar sales -13%
- Chain footwear dollar sales -4%
All Internet dollar sales down 3%
- Internet equipment dollar sales -5%
- Internet apparel dollar sales -6%
- Internet equipment accessory dollar sales +8%
- Internet footwear dollar sales -8%
* September 2009 vs. September 2008 sales growth is influenced by a later than average Labor Day holiday pushing sales into September in 2009.
